The variety of courses and modules that are available. The support system that is in place is exceptional. Every student was there to learn and develop each other professional career. The atmosphere was next to nothing. Everyone was challenged and worked together always find the right solution

What did you learn at TUS that has helped you in your current role?
I graduated from the MSc in Digital Marketing and I learned a lot that I covered in my current role at Dassault Systemes as a Digital Marketing Specialist. Social media is more than just posting content. It is the creation and execution of campaigns that make the difference between a successful post and a not-so-successful post. A module in particular that I relate back to the data analytics because what is posting content if you don’t have the data to support the results? The data informs you if changes need to be changed in order to be successful.

Jason Howley – Philomedia

Owner / Managing Director at Philomedia
TUS Class of 2019.

What was the highlight of your time studying at TUS?
My time in college was memorable and something I will always remember. It was my second attempt at college after deciding that engineering wasn’t for me. I was older than other first-year students, but it was really simple to blend in with the staff and students, and the smaller class sizes benefited me much better because you never felt like a “number”. Our training captivated our interest in the digital world and taught us the essentials of being the new brand of marketers, digital marketers. I particularly liked the idea of having both the content and strategy in one preliminary course; it’s only now that you grasp how crucial it is to comprehend both. During my studies, I also recall my college sports days fondly. In my last year, I joined the TUS rugby team, which reached the All-Ireland championship final that year. To this day, all of our teammates stay in touch on a regular basis.

What did you learn at TUS that has helped you in your current role?
During my time in college, I worked at a marketing agency in Mullingar. While I was in college, I was able to use theory-based skills at my work. When conducting advertising, it was critical to understand the foundations of digital marketing. Business maths and digital strategy became very useful in the year I started my studies. Along with marketing strategies this offered a deeper grasp of your target demographic, which has developed marketing as a whole during my time in studies. The fundamentals of legality in advertising was embedded throughout the course. The adoption of GDPR in 2017 was seen during my studies. This altered the digital spectrum for tailored advertisements for customers. We were fortunate to have an HR module that helped us to grasp what was and was not permitted.

Tell us about your Passion for Digital
One of the many reasons I fell in awe of digital marketing is that the field continues to advance as new platforms/strategies are introduced. I’m always on the lookout for trends and how they affect key performance indicators. As digital marketers, our job is to utilise digital channels to reach customers, boost awareness, promote products and services, and generate leads or sales. Because of the unique combination of creating, posting, and updating content, monitoring or managing social interactions and campaigns, and performing other tasks, digital marketers wear many hats on a daily basis, which drives my passion for digital. Most importantly, digital marketing provides fantastic learning opportunities, and there isn’t a single day that I don’t learn something new. Every day, I am met with new and emerging topics about which I am eager to learn more. After all, there is no crystal ball, so we must actively do our research while advancing our knowledge.

What are your Career Aims for the Future?
My self-founded digital marketing company, ‘Philomedia,’ is over two years old. I have proudly and successfully worked for a number of businesses, both nationally and internationally. We understand the difficulty business owners have in collaborating with multiple service providers for a mix of digital needs. From the beginning, one of my company’s goals was to become a single-source location for all needs, which include digital development, digital content, digital strategy, and many others. We aim to be the future solution to these challenges. We aim to help customers succeed online with omni channel marketing that is data-driven and results-driven. Each of our partner companies receive a specialised marketing team as well as real-time reporting software packed full of the KPI’s that matter. Last year, we won best emerging businesses 2022 and something we will drive further into the next chapter of Philomedia. However, Ireland has a very small market. I am passionate about expanding Philomedia into the international market. This is a long-term goal and have already signed contracts with American companies.

What is your advice for a Prospective Student?
Advice for prospective students would be to create an excellent digital presence for their own personal brand. This is imperative for communication and brand building. Students can use different online platforms to start with, for example, Linkedin is a great starting point for building your professional network. Secondly, as previously mentioned, knowledge is the key to success. Digital marketing students should emphasise learning new skills. Google has multiple training platforms, Meta has their blueprint training; and TikTok has their own training academy, and these are all free. Lastly, I would try these digital marketing techniques and get real life experience, even if it’s with a small business in town, you can get a wealth of knowledge and experience from running small campaigns, using your phone for videography/photography and within a short amount of time, you will find yourself more confident in taking on bigger projects!

What was your highlights of your time studying at TUS?

I spent 5 years studying at TUS, completing 3 degrees from level 6 to 8. Throughout the years, as an international student, I was especially close with the International Office staff. They were very kind and reliable which helped me a lot while being away from home. I also got closer with our module’s key lecturers Aisling and Louise as we spent our years of college together.

What did you learn at TUS that has helped you in your current role?

I enjoyed the 4 years partaking in the Digital Marketing course, as I do believe it gave me a good foundation to develop myself as a Digital Marketing Specialist. Due to this, I was able to learn on-the-job and adapt faster with my work. Business is everywhere around us, and the world is going towards digital. While this field is definitely challenging because everything is changing so rapidly. This is what also keeps things interesting for me.

What are your career aims for the future?

In my dream role, I would want to be inspired to continue learning while being able to implement my knowledge at a strategic level. Ideally, I would like to work as a Digital Marketing Director, but maybe after 10 more years!

Have you any advice for a prospective student?

Mark Lynch – HubSpot

Program Manager – HubSpot.
TUS Class of 2019.

What was your highlights of your time studying at TUS?

The biggest highlight for me was the hands on support that I received from the lecturers. The process of learning complex modules can look entirely different depending on your individual learning style. If you were willing to put in the work, the lecturers were there to ensure things were explained in a way that resonated with you. This is not the type of service you would receive in most third level institutes. Lecturers acted as mentors which made learning much easier.

What did you learn at TUS that has helped you in your current role?

Program Management requires many skills which I learned at TUS. The three skills that stand out are, designing a project plan, identifying the project timelines, and working closely with others to achieve a common goal. These three skills are crucial in any project for it to be successful. It doesn’t matter in what industry. Their passion for digital: In truth, when I enrolled at TUS, I didn’t have a passion for digital. I saw it as an opportunity to learn skills in an industry that had a vast growth potential. However, once I started learning some more about the industry, my passion for digital grew with my knowledge of it. Inbound Marketing has been my number one passion since studying it at TUS. Once you pair the Inbound methodology with data driven decision making, you can focus your content offerings around optimising the customer journey. In addition, Inbound Marketing and data driven decision making allows you to easily identify areas for growth by isolating weak points in your marketing strategy.

What are your career aims for the future?

I want to continue learning about developing strategic processes. Just like any marketing strategy, you need to identify important growth areas and implementing strategies to avail of those growth opportunities. My end goal is to be CEO of a tech company. Admittedly, I have a lot to learn, but I’m happy with my current career journey and look to soak up as much experience as I can with the opportunities that I find myself with.

Have you any advice for a prospective student?

Be open minded to where you want to go in your career and how TUS’s Digital Marketing degree can get you there. You will find modules that you really enjoy and have a passion for. Some modules are creative, others are technical, and some a psychological. Embrace the different aspects of them all and identify the ones that get you excited. Double down on those modules and soak up all the information you can get. Most importantly, don’t be afraid to connect with TUS alumni on LinkedIn. Even reach out to them for advice. We’re all here to help, and we love to hear from TUS students.

Shannon McGovern – Poppulo

What was the highlight of your time studying at TUS?
I enjoyed every second at TUS. Some of the main highlights during my time included being a Student Ambassador and helping promote the college to prospective students, being a Peer Assisted Student Support Leader and looking after first year students undertaking the Digital Marketing course and making sure they were set up for success, and finally, the support from lecturers I had when preparing for assignments and presentations was great. I have made friends for life and thoroughly enjoyed my time at TUS, I would love to relive it again!

What did you learn at TUS that has helped you in your current role?
From my time at TUS, the main learning for me was the Capstone Project I undertook in my final year. This practical, hands-on experience really helped me gain an understanding of what Digital Marketing jobs would look like when I finished college and what areas I was most passionate about.

Working with an external company and having ownership over building and implementing a digital strategy for them was amazing. I got to build professional relationships with colleagues, become really independent, creative, organised and learn a huge amount of new skills which has benefited me greatly in various roles in start-up and scale-up companies I have undertaken since college.

Tell us about your Passion for Digital
I absolutely love all things digital marketing. Every time I visit places like cafes, restaurants or hear business ideas, automatically I am always thinking about their digital presence and how it could look with a creative flair added. My passion for digital continues to grow all the time and here is a small glimpse of my career to date which has massively increased my passion for the industry.

I started off my digital career in 2019 – 2020 by undertaking the Capstone Project during my final year in TUS with a company called Zinkworks. When this project came to an end and I graduated, I was offered an Intern position at the company. At Zinkworks I was mainly working on all things strategy, website, social media marketing, content and recruitment marketing. In 2020 I was offered a Graduate position with CitySwift and worked my way up to an Executive position. I managed the marketing department during my time and got to work with various areas in Marketing which helped me double down and focus on areas I was passionate about for future jobs. Everything from PR agency management, industry event organising, email marketing, organic and paid social media marketing, metric reporting, video campaigns, multi channel lead generation and much more.

During April of 2022 I was offered a Digital Marketing Specialist position at Poppulo where I continue to thrive in my digital career. My past experiences allowed me to specialise in areas I loved most. Since starting at Poppulo my main areas of focus is on Paid Social and carrying out targeted advertising on Linkedln Campaign Manager aswell as other ad platforms. Apart from Paid Social, I work on everything from email marketing to push notification content management to carrying out market research and creating social media content and copy for various campaigns. Paid Social is where my passion lies, and I am grateful for my previous and current roles to have shaped this.

What are your Career Aims for the Future?
I have worked my way up from the bottom since finishing college from starting off with an Intern position in 2020, to a Graduate position, Executive position, and currently in a Specialist position. I hope to continue branching into new roles as I continue growing and learning in my digital career.

I would love to continue progressing in the field of Digital Marketing by constantly staying up to date with industry knowledge and always being willing to learn new trends, systems, and best practices in Digital Marketing. The more I learn, the more I can produce work to a high standard to gain more responsibility.

What is your advice for a Prospective Student?
My advice would be to work hard and give it your all. I worked so hard for 4 years from day 1 of
first year to the last day of final year and it was such a relief to see it all paying off through
results, graduating, and career opportunities. College years go by so fast so enjoy every minute
you can. It’s all about getting the balance right between working hard and socialising and
enjoying college.
